Matthew 26:26-36 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.
Yesterday I was given the opportunity to speak to the ladies on the topic of Intercession. There were only three of us who called in on the line vs. the 6-7 that usually do, and yet, where two or three are gathered in His Name He surely was there and the prayers that went forth for our children after it was done were amazing! God surely moved.
It was so profound the revelation the Lord gave. And a warning. I pointed out how Eli simply submitted to the will of God, which was honorable, however, he didn’t even try to cry out to the Lord or plead for his children. To submit to the will of God is honorable, yes. To understand the will of God is going to take place regardless is wisdom, however, the Lord never said to stop praying. There are too many examples of the Lord “altering the course” because someone prayed. I think of Moses and Abraham, they both had the spirit of intercessory prayer and the Lord harkened unto them.
In Ezekiel the Lord said He looked for someone to stand in the gap but there was none. The Lord I serve is the same God as Abraham’s God. He is the same God as John the Baptist’s God… He is God of all! He is never failing, unchanging, He’s utterly reliable! He is still plenteous in mercy to those that fear Him and He still longs for all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the Truth!
Today I was reading Matthew 26 as part of my daily devotional reading and I noticed that Jesus Himself gave us the example of prayer in this verse. He presented His case and then He submitted to the will of God. I think this is an example for us to pray, presenting our case to God to plead with Him, and then submit to His will.
